Answer question 3.10

I want to be spiritual

On one level we have to realize that we are living in the world (following our definition of -world-; see glossary), and that we are spiritual beings.

What is -doing well-? The best we can do indeed is live well; but when is it well? Here we are the only qualified judges. No one outside ourselves can tell us how to live our lives well, though we may see some good examples here and there.

So if there is -following our own judgement- some aspect of our way of living not well, then we must change that aspect. See Making a greater effort.

On another level this might involve cutting out many of the activities and projects we are involved in, the ones which make no sense. Create space for ourselves. Meditation, in whatever form, will be helpful. As humans we are producing such a huge lot of nonsense and rubbish. We mock ourselves by moaning we have to work too long days to earn an income while our real problem, most of the time, lies in our spending patterns: we want too much, we want it all; at least as much as our neighbours.

When we are longing to be spiritual, this is a response to the deep longing all entities have inside. There is not anything or any no-thing outside ourselves which could or would hinder us from developing our spiritual awareness, apart from our own distraction from this; for example by unfinished business (karma).

We have to accept and come clean with the consequences of past activities; this requires honesty, tough honesty with oneself, and often with others too.

Further, when we are ready to develop our spiritual awareness there might still be several distractions, potential addictions and desires smouldering inside us.

If we start this voyage of altering our awareness many distractions or temptations of all kinds and levels will meet us. So our talents of discipline, concentration and will power have to be developed more and more.

Define our targets clearly, and then start to work on learning to control the many aspects/talents inside us; for example we could start to develop our talent for being patient. There are tens of talents inside people which are only latent, neglected.

There does not need to be a real difference between being spiritual and living in this material world. We will always have to bring both into balance, centred and based on our increasing spiritual awareness.
